Obituary – Edward Greene

November 2, 2018

It is with much sadness that Carfax have received news of the recent death at the age of 81 of Mr. Edward Paul Campbell Greene on October 17, 2018 at his home in Oxford. Mr. Greene was a tutor who founded Edward Greene’s Tutorial Establishment in 1967 and became a great influence on the Oxford tutorial college industry. Founders of most, if not all, tutorial and sixth-form colleges in Oxford and some further afield had worked or taught for Mr. Greene before setting up on their own.

Edward Greene in his study in Oxford c. 2010 This includes the founder of Carfax, who had been a pupil at Greene’s prior to joining its staff and eventually being appointed the Lower Master. Some years later, when our founder was thinking of a name for his new education enterprise and wanted one that would have a recognizable Oxford ring to it, it was Edward Greene who suggested the name Carfax.

Some of early Carfax pupils and tutors will remember having tutorials in Mr. Greene’s beautifully appointed home in Pembroke Street that he generously opened to Carfax before Carfax College was established in its own permanent premises. To many, having tuition in this house full of interesting books, artefacts and curiosities, roaring open fires in winter, excellent coffee all year round, and above all Edward’s kind interest and wise counsel on all matters, became a major part of their Oxford experience.

Edward Greene was a man of extraordinary kindness, wide erudition, sharp mind of a polymath, iron logic, inimitable style, impeccable taste, faultlessly correct form, genuine modesty, thoughtful tact, steadfast principles, and firm Christian faith. All combined with the deepest capacity for friendship and enjoyment of life in a true original like no other. Whilst his passing severs one of increasingly few links to a long-gone world of gentlility and elegance and marks an end of an era for those whose life he had enhanced and enlightened, his legacy will live on through the lasting influence on his many friends and pupils.

The funeral will be held in Oxford on November 14, 2018 starting with worship at 11 a.m. in Mr. Greene’s home led by Revd. John MacLeod, the Minister of the London congregation of the Free Presbyterian Church of Scotland, followed by burial at Botley Cemetery at 1:15 p.m.

A TutorMapper Guest Blog: Carfax Tutors, Inspiring The Love Of Learning

When TutorMapper Looked For Quality And Excellence In Private Tuition, It Found That Carfax Tutors Had Set The Bar Very High Indeed

With almost half of all parents in London choosing to supplement their child’s schooling with additional private tuition, and the recent dramatic increase in the number of home-educated children, the private tutoring market is booming. But when TutorMapper established itself as a convenient way for families in London to find private tutors, we found that quality control within the industry was sometimes lacking. As an ambitious young company committed to excellence in private tutoring, this was completely unacceptable to us.

What makes TutorMapper unique within the rapidly expanding tutoring arena is that we work with only the finest and most reputable tutoring agencies in the capital, where every tutor has been subjected to the most rigorous of selection processes, and very few agencies meet our exacting standards quite as perfectly as Carfax Tutors do.

As part of the internationally renowned Carfax Education Group, and one of the founding members of The Tutors’ Association, Carfax Tutors specialises in providing only the highest quality tutors to help and support students across every stage of their educational journey. The Director of Studies at Carfax Tutors oversees a bespoke and comprehensive learning plan that can be as targeted or long-term as is necessary. Starting from as early as Nursery education and encompassing every key stage up to post graduate level, Carfax Tutors can provide assistance with specific exams or long terms education goals.

The driving force behind Carfax Tutors is to provide an elite and bespoke tuition programme tailored to a student’s individual needs, so whether you are looking for support with school entrance exams or want to explore your artistic nature, Carfax can provide the level of expertise you require through their selection of hand-picked tutors.

So, how does Carfax select tutors who can meet their consistently high standards? The whole process of tutor recruitment is a strict and rigorous one, with fewer than 20% of all applicants being invited for a final personal interview, and fewer still being invited to meet a student and their family. All prospective tutors are Oxbridge or Russell Group University graduates, and in addition to providing satisfactory references detailing their qualifications, teaching experience and academic excellence, they must also supply an up-to-date DBS check .

But this is only the first stage of the selection process. Carfax Tutors is distinguished by the care it takes when matching tutors with clients, and the exceptional level of support it provides to those families whose homes are opened up to the tutors. As Jordan Martin, Head of Marketing explains:

“We work really hard to match students with the right tutor so that each student will flourish. All our tutors have exceptional academic backgrounds, but it’s important to make sure that each student is happy and relaxed with their tutor”.

All of TutorMapper’s agencies screen their prospective tutors thoroughly, but there is no legal requirement that currently demands such a rigorous selection process, so why does Carfax Tutors go to such extraordinary lengths to recruit and match tutors? Well according to, Jordan Martin, “only the very best tutors can meet the exceptional standards that Carfax demands”.

It’s this personal touch and attention to detail that impresses those families who have benefitted from Carfax Tutors’ exacting standards.“I much prefer using Carfax, as the staff personally know the tutors they’re sending to my home”, are the thoughts of one of reassured client.

Investing in your child’s education is possibly one of the wisest decisions that you will ever make. At TutorMapper, we understand what an important decision choosing a private tutor is, and that is why we take the process as seriously as you do. We’re very proud of to be working with the exceptional Carfax Tutors where the needs of the individual go hand in hand with academic excellence.

Carfax Tutors Blog: Christmas in Paradise

January 12, 2015

Our tutor Louisa Gamon recently traveled to Mauritius on a short-term Flying Tutor placement, preparing a young girl for 11+ school entrance exams.

When Carfax mentioned a job in Mauritius, the offer of two weeks tutoring on an idyllic island, an image naturally sprung to mind of paradisal white beaches, tall palms and glittering sea. And that’s exactly what it was.

As ever, I was fortunate to be with a very welcoming family. We stayed in a hotel on the Le Morne Brabant peninsula, beneath the mystical presence of a rugged monolith, the peak of which loomed visibly behind us, casting ever-changing shadows as the light moved across it. My room overlooked a quiet part of the beach, with a shallow lagoon before it – unsurprisingly similar to that previously imagined image. Since we arrived at night, it was wonderful to wake on my first morning to the sound of birds, and to step out onto my balcony to be greeted with that view of the water.

Our focus there was the forthcoming 11+ exams and I worked hard to prepare my student in English and Maths, VR and NVR, whenever she wasn’t off snorkelling or collecting shells. The family had a villa in the vicinity of the hotel, right on the beach, and we conducted our lessons outside, at a table with a view of the sea. Occasionally we were interrupted by Bulbul birds or a gecko climbing up a chair; it was all vivid greens, colourful flora and turquoise water. Whenever I felt my student was becoming distracted, or simply if the energy began to wane, we took a break and stepped down onto the sand and put our feet in the water for a while. Then we returned, afresh, to work.

Though I had much time to myself, to spend as anyone else might spend a holiday – reading, swimming, eating, lazying about – I celebrated both Christmas and New Year with the family. I was touched by their hospitality and generosity; dinners were large and late, with endless toasts to good health, and we were treated to performances by local dancers and even a lecture on astronomy one evening. Afterwards we were taken down to the beach, to where a telescope had been positioned, so that we could take turns looking at Jupiter, a rare occasion on which the shadows of two of its moons could be seen. What I enjoyed most, however (which is what I enjoy most about any residential placement), was the chance to bond more fully with my student. Chatting to her at dinner or watching fireworks from a party on the beach, strengthened our daily lesson time rapport. I was able to know her better and to grow to understand her, and with that understanding I saw her confidence blossom, beyond her academics.

Apparently Mark Twain said, ‘…you gather the idea that Mauritius was made first, and then heaven; and that heaven was copied after Mauritius.’ I checked the quote and it’s slightly out of context – he was actually referring to the words of a local. I’ll take it though. It certainly was a heavenly place to teach.
