CARFAX QUOTED IN ABUDHABI WORLD

January 27, 2017

Christopher Gyngell, Manager of Carfax Education, Abu Dhabi, was recently quoted in AbuDhabi World’s article on ‘Where will innovation in education take learning in the future?’ discussing personalized education plans for children.

Christopher Gyngell“Five years ago, the big trend was making education available to all. That period is over, and now it’s moving into personalized plans for each individual child.

You see this particularly through the use of online portals. Children can log in, see their homework and return it to the teacher, while parents can communicate and see grades. It’s an example of when technology in schools works very well.

Now that schools have caught up in implementing this idea, it can only go further – for example, if a child is struggling with a topic in maths, the teacher can set extra homework.

But I caution against an over-reliance on it. Classroom teaching can never be replaced, and at some point that extra interface is needed to get through a hurdle – that’s when teaching becomes great.”

Carfax Pupils Succeeding Again

September 2, 2016

We are thrilled to report that our students have had some excellent A-level results, which in turn have confirmed their places at Britain’s leading academic institutions.

To use but a few examples, students will be taking up places this coming September at St Edmund Hall, University of Oxford, to read French, Aeronautical Engineering at University of Bristol and Sociology at The London School of Economics and Political Science. Last but not least, we had a student complete 5 A-levels at A grade, along with a B at AS. She will be embarking on her PPE studies at New College of the Humanities.

We are immensely proud of all our students, and wish them success and happiness in their future academic endeavours.

Carfax’s Jordan Martin Attends the World Economic Forum in Davos

January 25, 2016

Carfax Education’s Head of Marketing, Jordan Martin, attended the World Economic Forum in Davos last week with our partner Save the Children. This year, the overarching theme of Davos was the Fourth Industrial Revolution and a myriad of corporates and NGOs discussed the role that this phenomenon will play in shaping the future of education on a global scale. Martin attended presentations and discussions on this subject with some of the world’s key players including Pearson, Boston Consulting Group, the Red Cross, and Accenture. The sentiment is positive, but there is an incredible amount of work to be done. Both corporates and NGOs emphasized that meaningful partnerships between their sectors will be paramount in tackling the enormous task of raising global educational standards. Technology will inevitably play a key role in creating positive change, but views on said role vary greatly.

Martin spoke with John Green, author of The Fault in Our Stars and YouTuber of the vlogbrothers channel, and his wife Sarah Urist Green, PBS host, about the role of film as an educational tool. Both are passionate about their medium and believe that it has the capacity to play a key role in facilitating positive change in the classroom, but that it is certainly not an alternative to actual teaching. Many other technology-based tools were discussed, but conversations were driven by a more fundamental question; what is the role of education in driving equality on a global scale? The BBC’s Nik Gowing said, “Education should promote an entrepreneurial mindset from an early age; the traditional system does not.” This outlook was widely shared as many believe that educating a generation of entrepreneurs in developing nations is one of the most promising means of advancing the people of these nations. Martin spent a lot of time with Save the Children’s CEO, Janti Soeripto, during his time in Davos. She noted that we must “[let] go of what we traditionally think of education to propel us forward.” Janti discussed education as the most essential tool in fostering civil society and ultimately achieving equality. These concepts were reoccurring throughout Martin’s time at Davos with special attention being paid to the correlation between education and income as well as women’s rights.

Pearson, the world’s largest education provider, made it very clear that their position in the segment obligates them to drive change. They are looking towards inclusive business models and expanding their network of charitable and development partners in order to fulfil this obligation. Their Chief Corporate Affairs Officer, Kate James, used a session to explore solutions that will allow child refugees to access an education and avoid a detrimental gap in their learning. Open education resources were discussed, but it was concluded that this is not a comprehensive solution. Corporates addressed the economic benefits of investing in education in developing countries; it is thought by many experts that the potential for innovation in both education and educational technology is greatest in these nations. Carfax is extremely interested in technology’s future role in education and Carfax Projects is continuously exploring this.

At Davos 2016 many issues, aims, and solutions were discussed. The issues are real, but the hope is greater. As education providers, consultants, facilitators, and supporters, we explored global educational commons, holistic policies, and investment sources. Davos was an incredible venue for generating solutions and sharing expertise. As everyone returns home, Carfax looks forward to watching these discussions become realities and doing its part to support such positive changes.

Excellent successes as another Sixth Form application cycle comes to an end!

December 2, 2015

Phelps Gate at Yale University looking in towards the campus with people visible in the distance.

It is a very proud day for Carfax Consultants! As another Sixth Form application cycle draws to a close, we can reflect on some excellent successes with our applicants this year. All pupils were extremely dedicated and were single-minded in their pursuit of a place at their favourite school. Competition was tough, often with more than 5 candidates per place, but our pupils worked tirelessly, building up their knowledge of chosen A level subjects with specialist tutors, revising for examinations, participating in workshops and seminars. All students were offered places – no student left the November examination battlefield without any offers. What is incredible, and should fill our pupils with immense pride, is that out of all who applied 100% received offers from their top choice schools, and two of our pupils received offers from all of the schools that they applied to! This is indeed commendable and we congratulate all of our pupils for this fantastic achievement! We are looking forward to pupils taking up offers from King’s School, Canterbury, Rugby School, Charterhouse School, Shrewsbury School, Stowe School, Marlborough College, and other leading schools.

Join Carfax Consultants at the Fulbright Commission’s USA College Day Fair, 24-25 September, 2015.

September 14, 2015

Carfax Consultants would like to bring to your attention a worthwhile event in London related to US higher education: The Fulbright Commission’s USA College Day Fair, this September 25-26, 2015.

For close to 40 years the Fulbright Commission, which is partially funded by the US government, has brought together a large number of American universities under one roof. The commission’s aim through this fair is to help students and their families in Britain familiarize themselves with American universities and their liberal arts curriculum. Indeed, the fair serves as an excellent opportunity for students and their families to engage directly with representatives from some of America’s leading universities (including those from the Ivy League and University of California system).

We are happy to announce that Carfax Consultants will have a stand at this year’s event. We will be on hand to answer questions and offer general advice on all matters related to the American university application process. We would also be available to schedule more in depth consultations for October and November.

The fair’s popularity is clear: last year alone over more than 4,500 people attended Fulbright’s College Day Fair. Similar numbers are envisioned for this year’s fair. Accordingly, if you are interested in the event, we would strongly recommend that you register your participation as soon as possible.

We look forward to seeing you at College Day!
